Sue Redman, the SASS chaplain, muses on some of the things she learned during her recent trip to the USA.

When I was in the USA I learnt about the one in sixty rule. I have to confess to having never heard about this rule before...

In case you haven't heard of it either, it relates distance from a point to distance on an arc, and this is of supreme importance to navigators because one degree off course, given time, will result in a very different destination to the one originally intended.

Now the guy explaining the rule didn't convince me to check my compass because of his illustration. He said that if a pilot set out for Hawaii from the USA mainland and flew one degree off course for a given period of time s/he would end up in Australia and I didn't think that was such a bad thing :) What I do agree is a bad or maybe a sad thing however, is when pastors and churches or individual Christians end up in a different place to the place they had originally intended simply because they had not created check points to ensure they got there.

And what might those check points be? Might they be things like how we're spending our time? What we're spending our money on? What is filling our head space?

In Revelation 2 Christ affirms the Christians at Ephesus for getting almost everything right but there is one thing He needs to calls them on and that is their love for Him. This call isn't simply a rebuke or a stab at people's consciences, it's actually a call to return home and that is my cry today. If there is something that is directing you away from the heart of God and away from His heart for lost people, my prayer is that you will hear His call and come home.

See you there! Sue
